Churches call for Afghanistan peace mission

A story in the Dec. 10, 2009 edition of the National Post illustrates an ecumenical pleading to Canadian leaders to pursue a diplomatic solution to the conflict in Afghanistan.

Mennonite Church Canada is one of 22 member denominations of the Canadian Council of Churches. Together, the CCC drafted an 18 page brief recommeding peaceful solutions in Afghanistan, to Prime Minister Harper and other government leaders urging Canada to "kick-start this process by using its diplomatic clout to convince the United States and other players of the 'primacy' of negotiations."

One wonders what the situation in Afghanistan would look like today if this kind of solution had been the goal at the outset of the conflict, supported by the same kind amount of time, energy, and resources so far committed to the war.
